De Chirico, Art Basel and blue chip art

“This De Chirico is marvellous!” “Hold on, I have a better one to show you... yet, the best one it's the one you have in your living room: marvellous!”

This is definitely not the kind of conversation I normally bump into in my daily life, but it's a rather ordinary conversation at Art Basel, the art event of the year in Hong Kong, during the media and VIPs preview days.

Between the booths of the fair, gallerists and collectors keep flirting for three days: champagne, fancy snacks, winks and smiles, escapades behind the scenes to discover the best pieces, the ones hidden in the back of the booth.

'You go to Art Basel just to see blue chip art - how boring - otherwise it's a loss of time' tells me a friend and journalist colleague.

What is blue chip?

Sotheby's tell me that blue chip means any art that's expected to reliably increase in economic value regardless of the general economic conditions, a solid investment, of great value as the blue chips you find in casinos.

De Chirico is quite a blue chip - like Koons, Kapoor, Hirst, Condo and many others - and it's an incredible

home decoration item!

“Questo De Chirico é meraviglioso!” “Aspetta te ne mostro un altro ancora più bello... ma il migliore rimane sempre quello che hai in soggiorno: splendido!”

Non é certo il genere di conversazioni che animano la mia quotidianità, ma a Art Basel, l’evento artistico dell’anno a Hong Kong, é solo una delle tante conversazioni che si intercettano nelle giornate dedicate ai VIPs.

Tra i padiglioni della fiera, galleristi e collezionisti flirtano per tre giorni interi: champagne, canapè, sorrisi ammiccanti, bisbigli e fughe nei retrobottega, per scoprire i pezzi più preziosi, quelli che non si fanno vedere a tutti.

‘Vai a Art Basel solo se t’interessa l’arte blue chip - che noia - altrimenti é tempo perso’ mi confida un’amica e collega giornalista. Blue chip? Sotheby’s mi informa che blue chip significa investimento solido, sicuro, e di gran valore, come i gettoni blu dei casinò.

De Chirico é un bel gettone blu - come Koons, Kapoor, Hirst, Condo e tanti altri - ed è un formidabile pezzo di arredamento!
